PsycleScape is an online community dedicated to the appreciation, study, and celebration of cephalopods—the remarkable octopuses, squid, cuttlefish, and nautiluses that have fascinated people for centuries. Since its founding in 2001, PsycleScape has brought together marine enthusiasts, artists, scientists, gamers, writers, and curious minds from around the world.
Although members hail from many countries, the community has always had a particularly strong presence in England, where many of its longest-standing members reside.
PsycleScape began during the heyday of Yahoo Chat, when a small group of marine life enthusiasts discovered they shared an unusual passion for cephalopods. What began as casual conversations about octopus intelligence, giant squid legends, and bizarre underwater discoveries soon became a regular gathering.
The group's name reflected both curiosity and imagination: PsycleScape represented the ever-changing landscape of ideas inspired by some of the ocean's most intelligent and mysterious creatures.
As friendships formed, the community expanded beyond marine biology. Members shared artwork, photography, fiction, scientific discoveries, and plenty of good-natured debates over one timeless question:
Which cephalopod is the greatest?
As Yahoo Chat gradually disappeared, PsycleScape evolved alongside the internet. Members migrated through forums, IRC, instant messaging platforms, early social media, and eventually modern online communities.
The community exists because of the people—not the platform.
This adaptability allowed PsycleScape to thrive while many online communities vanished with the services that hosted them.
Although entirely online, PsycleScape welcomes members from around the globe. Its largest concentration of members remains in England, but discussions regularly include participants from Europe, North America, Australia, and beyond.
Everyone is welcome—from lifelong marine biologists to newcomers who simply think octopuses are fascinating.
More than two decades after its founding, PsycleScape continues to provide a friendly place where curiosity is encouraged and every question is welcome.
Popular topics include:
The community values respect, learning, humor, and a shared appreciation for Earth's most extraordinary invertebrates.
One of PsycleScape's oldest traditions is asking every new member a simple question:
There is no wrong answer.
Perhaps you're captivated by the clever Common Octopus, amazed by the dazzling camouflage of the Cuttlefish, inspired by the speed of the Reef Squid, intrigued by the mysterious Vampire Squid, or drawn to the ancient elegance of the Chambered Nautilus.
Whatever your choice, your favorite cephalopod says something about what fascinates you most about the ocean.
